Follow the route.

Check this site out. Buggered if I can work out the way you connect this to the page to my blog so I’ll just have to save the link into the text of a post every time I update the route. I wish I could upload a GPS waypoint file but the technical specifics elude me at the moment. Besides, I don’t really want another gadget????

Check out this other cool site with pictures submitted by other cycling fools.

WARMSHOWERS is a splendid site that connects bicycle tourists worldwide into a community that offers free accomodation to traveling bikers. I was alerted to it by Samuel Carez, a French bicyclist who stayed with us in Sydney. I have used it alot now and thoroughly recommend you join.

Fantastic! Brave! Crazy? If you need assist when in Tennessee, let us know – happy to help out! Read about your trip on David’s Sticks and String.

  2. What a ride! It makes my day bike trips insignificant. Best of luck, will follow along with you on the blog!

  3. Trev

Gday mate. Great so far. Looking forward to more pics and your amusing and descriptive writing style.

  4. Emily Smartt

Hello (again from TN) – best wishes on your journey. I also heard about you from David Reidy. How very exciting. Cycle on!

  5. The other Johnnie

HA! Holy crap I didn’t realise you had landed at Normandy (I mean LAX). This blog is a stellar idea!

    Hi, Jonny;
We started this morning. It’s great fun to be back, as you’ll recall. I’ve just blogged in to your website
and will put it (questionably) in my “Favourites”. My 60th was fun – at Palm Beach – a pity you missed it! I almost missed it myself, but was not allowed to. Hugo has been good, because I like his girlfriend (better than him!). Yvonne has been bad. Mivia has been worse – and unmotivated as well. See what has happened since you left?
You didn’t bring your “Blackadder” DVDs across to me, so I’ll go to your house. I’ll steal them unless you let your parents know about it.
Bad news! – Elektra is a bio teacher, not Physics! I have been appointd to be her buddy.
Time to eat. Have a ball! Take off weight. From your published in-bloggers, you should meet some nice people en route! Be good.
    George.

Howdy JJW!! Hoooeeee! We got both kinds here…….

I have just returned to work with the other state comrades. (da!) A school with no kids is quite a nice working environment!

All is well here – our three week trip to Mac’s beach was a much needed break with three swims a day and no stress.

I must admit, your two incorrect addresses for JP and Wes made me laugh. That was not unbelievable – it’s vintage JJW!!

Your trip sounds great so far. What kinds of places are you staying in each night?

Say g’day to the ex-pats for me.

    Kampai!

    Pete.

PS. Look out for the line dancing!! (The RM’s might have been be a winner in those establishments)

  8. Trev

Gday. Tried to skype you a few time but no answer. You must be busy chatting up another ‘American Sweetheart.’
    Great pics by the way.

Trev your photo came up on the computer a couple of times – don’t know why call didn’t go through, apart from poor reception.

    Dear Johnathan,
It was such a pleasure to meet with you in Round Top. Did you get to go into the Festival Institute? I wish to have spent more time with you. We were looking for property as you know and had several people and appointments to make in the area. I’m a little jealous, though not too much, that I too am not doing the same thing right now. If you happen to head to Tennessee… I have a good friend in Jonesboro that rode with me across the USA in 78′. Then he did it alone again in 2003. He also has done most of the Appalachian trail on foot. He and his wife Debra have a beautiful home now in the mountains, and I bet they would love to put you up for a couple of nights and get to know you. Keep in touch. I put your website on my favorites. I hope to see you again.

    Michael

  12. Dear Michael

I always enjoy talking which is why I often don’t get that far in a day. I certainly enjoyed our coffe together. I am currently in Natchez Mississippi. Thanks for helping with the international “where is Jonathan now?” enquiries that I am now just finding out about. = unbelievable! ……. though amazing at the same time. She is a smart girl. You were correct in your assessment of WiFi connection paucity in eastern Texas & Louisiana. The knees are having a rest and I am getting ready for another posting of dubious quality. As for photos; this library operates the same upload restriction born of virus fear as any other during my croos country meander.

……as for Tennessee; any lodgings where I don’t have to sleep in my tent would be gratefully accepted. If your friends there are amenable to a sweat soaked Aussie camping on their floor we can converse via email. I think I gave you my address.

I will be heading up the Natchez Trace from Thursday arriving in Nashville about 9 days later.

    cheers Jonathan

    Jonathan,

    J. and I enjoyed meeting you at Rocky Springs campground on the NT on Saturday, having breakfast and chatting a couple times on the trace during the day. Good wishes for the rest of your journey. I will be following your blog and look forward to reading about your adventures.

See you in Sindey some day.

    Michael C.

    Johnathan,

You are in our thoughts today as you get underway again in your trek. While the Blue Ridge Parkway will be a demanding ride, you will be awed with its majesty. Thinking of you, Jimmy and Betty Sartain

  15. Betty Sartain

    Jonathan,

Sorry about your name! I had a student who spelled his with an “h”. Old habits are hard to break. Betty

  16. hey Aussie. How are you? Jules and I are trying to find you at Ratliff ferry and All I can see is you putting in that you were there?! Where is my picture?

  17. I found it!! I am a superstar!!! Hope you are having a wonderful trip!!

  18. Hi Jonathan,

It was alot of fun having a few beers and dinner with you!

Marion and I came down the blue ridge from mile 138 to 150 yesterday after climbing up out of the valley to the east .. did not see you so I hope you got away OK .. or not! .. as the weather was starting to change! Thought of you wed. night as we did not see any camping sites on our section of the BR! .. don’t worry .. we had a fabulous ride .. hope you did too!

We forgot to tell you to SLOW DOWN and TAKE OFF YOUR SUNGLASSES when you go through the tunnel at Panorama (about mile 25) .. it’s very bumpy and DARK and a bit of a shock at 50km/hr coming down the hill!

    Enjoy the Blue Ridge!

    Harold and Marion

  19. Johnny, oh Jonny, where the hell are you? Had a fantastic time in Strasburg, VA and Washington, DC during your impromtu stop over.
I trust that your trip to my old home town of Wilkes-Barre, PA worked out well. I just got back from a gig near Harper’s Ferry, WVA. If you took route 340, you saw what I saw- lots of beautiful mountains and killer river bends loaded with outdoor types. New York will be a blast.
Hopefully, you’ll continue to encounter as many interesting folks as you’ve reported in this journal.
Give us a call when you plant your feet again. And be safe out there!

    ~Joe

    Hey Jonathan,
It was great fun to get onto your blog site at last. We certainly wondered how you made out from the ferry landing in Iceland; it must have been quite a climb. I left my camera on the bus from Seydisfjordur to Egilsstadir…discovered when I went to take a photo from the airport observation deck. I was lucky that the camera was found and sent airfreight to us in Reykjavik for only $15, the only inexpensive part of being in Iceland. Fortunately, our hotel room came complete with a kitchenette so we ate in except for a final treat meal our last night in Iceland…the most expensive meal I’ve ever eaten but it was great fun…Icelandic foods accompanied by assorted wines from elsewhere; we dined from 9:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m.! We did two traditional tours while in Reykjavik, included as part of our package, and one hiking trip in a nature reserve on our own, more or less, absolutely spectacular scenery, but I know you will have seen some of that yourself. Looking forward to reading more of your travels. Keep well! Susan
